PHOTO METADATA FIELDS
Each photo of the SIMoN photo library contains a set of information that is called metadata. These metadata describes the photo and allows the photo to be searched in a number of ways. Each metadata field, and how it is searched, is described below.
 
Metadata fields


Location
This is the name of the location where the photo was taken. As a rule, all locations are spelled out completely and no abbreviations or acronyms are allowed (e.g., Point Lobos rather than Pt. Lobos). This can be searched by entering a value into the Keyword Search box.

General category
This is a list of categories defined by SIMoN Staff as a general way of grouping photos. One category is selected for each photo. This can be searched by entering a value into the Keyword Search box. The Quick Search options will produce results based on these categories. The list includes:
  • Organism - mammal
  • Organism - fish
  • Organism - bird
  • Organism - algae
  • Organism - invertebrate
  • Organism - unknown
  • Community / assemblage of organisms
  • Research / monitoring project
  • Seascape

Sanctuary management category
This is a list of categories defined in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary's Management Plan. These allow SIMoN to group photos according to the appropriate management issue or activity. One category is selected for each photo. This can be searched by entering a value into the Keyword Search box. The list includes:

Species name
This is the genus and species name of an organism. This can be searched by entering either a genus or a species, or both, into the Species Search box.

Photo caption
This is the caption of the photo created by the photographer. All words in the caption can be searched by entering a value into the Keyword Search box.

General photographer comments
These are general comments on the photo entered by the photographer. All words in the comments can be searched by entering a value into the Keyword Search box.

Photographer name
This is the first and last name of the photographer. This field can be searched by entering a value into the Keyword Search box.
