How-to Guide:

Welcome to the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary's (MBNMS) Historical Marine Ecology Timeline. This timeline is designed to intertwine the anthropogenic and natural histories of the region encompassed by the MBNMS through time.

Directions

There are two timeline bands located within the main window: The top (Overview band) spans from 1500 AD to the present; the bottom (Detail band) provides details and images of events that have occurred within the decade(s) being displayed. The highlighted area (vertical white bar) within the Overview band indicates the range of time displayed within the Detail band.

Click on an event within the Detail band to access more information. You may limit the type of events being displayed by selecting a single category from the menu on the left side of the screen. You may also use the "Search For" function to find information related to a specific topic or event.

Navigation:
The Overview and Detail bands are synchronized; moving through time in one band will automatically move through time in the other. Use the Overview band for navigating through time in century increments, the Detail band for decade increments.

There are a number of ways in which you can navigate through the timeline.

1. Quick Navigation:
   Navigate to the start of a century using the "Jump to" links at the top of the page.
2. Mouse Navigation:
   
   • Double-click - Double-click your mouse within the timeline to center the timeline at that point.
   • Click and hold - Click and hold the mouse button down while hovering over the timeline and then move the mouse to the right or left to navigate backward and forward through time, respectivley.
   • Mouse Scroll - Hover over an area within the timeline and use the scroll wheel. The timeline will move forward or backward through time relative to the direction the scroll wheel is turned.
3. Touchpad:
   If using a touchpad on a laptop, use the scroll feature on the right edge of the touchpad. The timeline will move forward when scrolling down, and backward when scrolling up.
4. Keyboard Navigation:
   Press the Tab key until the timeline is selected (this will occur immediately after the Search field is selected). Use the Left and Right arrow keys to navigate backward and forward through time, respectively.
