The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation released a short film, Discover Wonder: The Octopus Garden, a remarkable, mind-expanding adventure that journeys with a team of scientists from the decks of high-tech exploration vessels to the dark and uncharted depths of Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Their mission: to collect crucial data from one of the rarest and deepest fertile octopus brooding colonies on the planet, which was discovered by researchers on the E/V Nautilus.
This film was inspired by the original discovery of more than 1,000 mother octopus that were brooding their eggs within warm water emanating from the seafloor at over 2 miles deep. Subsequent expeditions with the submersible Alvin, Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, and once again on the E/V Nautilus, they discovered even more octopus nurseries…even a whale fall that is featured in this film.
